A 32-year-old Utah woman turned to her mother for help after suffering about a dozen miscarriages Now, Lorena McKinnon's 58-year-old mom is set to give birth to her own grandchild - her first - this month. As The Salt Lake Tribune reports, Julia Navarro agreed to serve as a gestational surrogate for her daughter and son-in-law. After several tries, with the longest pregnancy only lasting about 10 weeks, Micah and Lorena McKinnon began looking for a surrogate. A sister and a friend considered carrying their baby but decided against it. That's when Lorena's mom offered her uterus. Although doctors warned there was only a 45 percent chance of a successful implantation because of Navarro's age, they decided to give it a try. She underwent three months of hormone shots before an embryo fertilized by the McKinnons was implanted. Amazingly, the procedure was a success and now a baby girl is expected within the month. Even though mom is the surrogate, the group still has a contract and sought counseling. Related: An artificial insemination gone wrong "The psychologists wanted to make sure we knew what we were getting into - that we were mentally prepared," McKinnon tells The Salt Lake Tribune. "Mostly, surrogacy contracts are with people you don't know. It was weird to have a contract with my mom." The McKinnon's have saved thousands using Lorena's mom for a surrogate. A couple can spend around $60,000 on procedures and payment, but the couple is saving about half of that by using her mother. Imagine that. Your baby developing in the very same uterus you did. Amazing. Mother and daughter think so, too, and tell The Salt Lake Tribune the entire experience has bonded them immensely.
