Police detectives in Ughelli community,
Delta State arrested fourteen armed robbery and kidnap suspects during a
two-day raid
on the hoodlums’ hideout.
The security operatives also rescued two kidnap victims during the operation.
The state Police Commissioner, Alkali
Baba Usman, who confirmed the arrest of the suspects, said the police
recovered 60 rounds of ammunition, 23 cartridges, 24 locally made guns
and 10 vehicles, adding that four of the suspects had been charged to
court.
Usman, who attributed the arrest to the
collaborative efforts of the police and vigilante groups in the
community, admitted that there had been an upsurge in criminal
activities in Ughelli in the last one month and added that the police
would continue to do everything within the law to ensure that crime was
reduced to the barest minimum in the state.
He
said, “I assure all Deltans that we have in place adequate security
measures to effectively police all parts of Delta State, well trained
personnel have been deployed to the Safer Highways and other patrol
outfits of the command to ensure that all roads in the state are safe
for travellers both day and night.”
Meanwhile, some persons suspected to be
hired assassins on Sunday shot and killed the personal assistant to the
Head Council Service Commission in Delta State, Ese Emajemite.
It was gathered that Emajemite was
murdered at Orerokpe in Okpe Local Government Area of the state while on
his way home to meet his family after he had returned from Asaba where
he attended a church programme.
Confirming the incident, the state
Police Commissioner, Alkali Usman, said the police were investigating
the circumstances surrounding the killing of the personal assistant to
the commission’s boss.
Usman vowed that the police would fish out Emajemite killers.
Speaking with Southern City News, one
Comrade Oyibo, a close confidant of the deceased family, described the
incident as sad and unfortunate, recalling that the deceased got married
about a year ago.
Sources said Emajemite was shot at a close range and was quickly rushed to the state-owned teaching hospital in Oghara.
Emajemite, according to sources, died few minutes later after efforts to stabilise him proved abortive.
The deceased family members, who spoke
on the incident and did not want their names in the print, said, “We are
yet to decipher what happened. He was a friendly, easy-going, promising
and lively young man.
Someone just snuffed life out of him. It
is natural that when you are making progress in life, people will be
after you. He was a level 10 legislative officer, who grew from the
ranks”.
At the family house in Bomadi, the
council boss, Mr. Oluwole Karetimi, assured that the killer of his
personal assistant would be fished out in no distant time, adding that
the council would assist in his burial.
