Police investigating the
disappearance of Nida Naseer from Newport say a body found near the city is the
missing teenager.
The discovery at Newport Wetlands off West Nash Road on Thursday came three months after she disappeared.
Nida, 19, was not wearing a coat or shoes when she vanished while putting out bins at her Pill family home.
A post mortem examination has yet to be concluded so her death is being treated as unexplained by Gwent Police.
Since Nida went missing we
have remained hopeful that she would be found safe and well and reunited with
her family”
"Since Nida went missing we have remained hopeful that she would be found safe and well and reunited with her family.
"Yesterday's discovery was a very sad development for me and the investigative team who have remained committed to finding Nida since the night she was reported missing by her family.
"We continue to support them at this dreadful time, and on their behalf can I please ask that they now be left alone to grieve."
Public appeals
Police told Nida's parents about the
discovery of her body yesterday.Nida was last seen at her home in Linton Street on 28 December at 20:00 GMT.
Her body was found about four miles (6.5km) from her home.
Natural Resources Wales, which manages the wetland, said her body appeared to have washed up on to an area of salt marsh not accessible to the public.
Her family has made several public appeals for her to return home.
Family members say she was depressed before she went missing and believe she disappeared because the family's asylum-seeker status prevented her from attending university.
They had sought asylum after coming to the UK from Pakistan five years ago but their application was turned down a year ago. They have appealed.
Since Nida disappeared, police have investigated hundreds of lines of inquiry and taken more than 100 statements, receiving more than 50 calls reporting possible sightings across the UK.
