Professor Dora Akunyili, former Director General of the National
Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and a
former minister of Information has died.She was aged 59.
Dora
died in an India Hospital, in Bangalore, Karnataka State where she
has been receiving treatment for an undisclosed
ailment, various reports
quoted family sources as saying.
Former governor of her home state, Peter Obi, visited her in the hospital on 27 May, debunking reports then that Dora had died.
Dora made national mark during her tenure as NAFDAC DG.
he also contested for a seat in the Senate on the platform of APGA in
her state of Anambra. But she narrowly lost the seat to Chris Ngige of
the All Progressives Congress.
National attention was drawn to her
illness when she appeared, unrecognised as a delegate at the ongoing
National Conference. She had lost weight and her effervescent self.
Reports at that time said the emaciated woman had to introduce herself to fellow delegates.
