The oldest person in the world lives in Brooklyn — and even she
can’t believe it.
Susannah Mushatt Jones, 116 next month, of East New York, has
inherited the title of the oldest living person since the death of
Jeralean Talley, 116, from Inkster, Mich., this week, according to the
Gerontology Research Group.
“This Sunday I asked her, ‘Do you know how old you are?’ ” said the
centenarian’s niece Lois Judge, of Coney Island. “She said, ‘No, tell
me.’ ”
Jones was born in 1899 to Alabama sharecroppers. She was married briefly and had no children.
Her family insists she has no secrets to living a long life — except maybe her hearty appetite.
She eats four strips of bacon, eggs and grits for breakfast “365 days per year,” her niece said.
“She was cooking until she was 100 years old — everything from the
South, all kinds of food, okra, collard greens, cakes and pies. All
recipes from her mother,” Judge said.
